Jesus and Isaiah have strong even harsh words for us today.
How could Jesus who announces the Kingdom of peace speak of such difficult divisions, such terrible alienation among families, and such painful disappointments?
How could the Lord, through his prophet Isaiah, reject sacrifices offered in his honor?
The Lord concludes that the people are honoring themselves and not the Lord.
They offer animals instead of themselves.
Jesus wants his disciples to know the profound nature of their calling, sacrifice and commitment.
Jesus knows the cross will cut across generational, gender and family lines.
Jesus knows in losing self and family and security one gains life, family and the all encompassing love of the father.
The harsh words are meant to challenge us to offer up self so that we may receive live in the Father, Son and Spirit.
